Book Description
Luther, a school janitor, sits in jail while awaiting trial for the murder of a local car dealer, Scott Blackburn. Blackburn, celebrated as a prominent businessman, had a secret past, and may be behind the rape and murder of Luther’s young daughter, Summer.
The story of the current trial is woven in with the backstory of an earlier murder case involving a waitress and her volatile husband. The husband was readily convicted and given the fast track to execution. Both cases indicate how rapidly small-town justice can arrive in this rural East Texas county. However, the true facts in both situations conflict with the public versions that everyone believes.
Unexpected assistance for Luther arrives from a seasoned legal aid attorney, replacing the pliable public defender on the eve of the trial. Still, the sheriff is determined that Luther will be convicted, no matter the consequences.
Payoffs and endemic corruption are routine in the county sheriff’s office, all taking place while the oblivious local citizenry celebrates the department’s notorious tough-on-crime façade. During Luther’s trial, the public face of the department starts to crumble as falsified and contrived evidence is exposed by Luther’s attorney. These revelations don’t stop the corrupt sheriff from using intimidation, physical abuse, and threatened murder to force Luther into a damning confession that would end the trial.
Meanwhile, the sheriff’s secretary is determined to find out what really happened to her close friend in the earlier case. Assisted by a newcomer with a vague history, the more she digs into the earlier murder trial, the more she exposes herself to the same fate as her dead friend.
The current murder case’s weakness threatens to derail the rush to judgment. Only with a final surprise can Luther win the case and expose the sheriff and his sadistic deputy, but that revelation may place his family in certain danger.
